The around the Island canoe races were held in
the late seventies as part of the annual Nelson Days festivities
hosted by the Nelson Softball Association. The event was an immediate hit, at race time the shoreline on St Patrick’s Drive with filled with spectators. The event drew participants from all over the river.
Many of those who raced in Nelson also participated in the race from Sunny Corner to Newcastle during Newcastle Canada Days and other races throughout the province. These competitors such as Fred Kernighan, Hubert Sherrard, Gary and Clayton Mahoney made the event more exciting.
Confident that the event would still be popular the Nelson Fair Committee has added it to its list of activities. The race will be held at 1:00 PM sharp on Saturday September 15th. Registration will be held from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
The race will be open to those 18 and over and trophies will be awarded to the first second and third place winners. Those who finish in the top three in 2012 and 2013 and win the 2014 event will be eligible for an attractive cash prize.
Registration will be $5.00 per person. All participants will be required to wear life jackets and comply with all safety provisions outlined in the registration form. The event will be patrolled to ensure the safety of the contestants.
Event organizers welcome participants from far and wide.
